Mt. Washington Summit (winter) - 3 days/2 nights
The 6288’ summit of Mt. Washington is the king of the White Mountains towering over all other surrounding peaks. A winter attempt is a serious undertaking and should only be attempted by experienced hikers, fully equipped, and in good physical condition. Infamous for its challenging winter conditions, Mt. Washington sits in the middle of three weather systems which converge and result in strong winds, cold temperatures, and substantial snow/ice. This round-trip adventure will take most climbers 8-10 hours to complete with much of it above tree line and exposed to the elements. You arrive the night before summit day, grab dinner and complete last minute gear checks. An early morning start allows maximum daylight for your epic mountaineering adventure up the Lions Head winter route. As the terrain becomes more technical, crampons and an ice axe are mandatory as you ascend the icy trail. Above tree line strong winds will accompany you across the alpine garden as you follow the cairns to the summit. Retrace your route back to Pinkham Notch, then grab dinner and a celebratory beer at one of the many local breweries.
