Katahdin-Knife Edge Loop - 3 days/2 nights
This 8-mile loop is a must-do hike for those that want to complete one of the contenders for best hikes in New England. Starting from Roaring Brook Campground you will be treated with some of the best sustained views of the surrounding mountain vistas. After summiting Pamola, you will encounter the famous Knife Edge which is a one-mile traverse across the serrated ridge top of the southern wall of the Great Basin. With precipitous cliffs plunging more than 2,000 feet the trail is reduced to less than 3 feet in some places. This counterclockwise route presents post summit challenges during the downclimb of Cathedral Ridge from Baxter Peak. This spectacular mountain route offers one of the best hiking experiences in the Northeast. Regardless of which direction you attack this adventure, the return to Roaring Brook will be challenging and rewarding. Expect 8-10 hours on the trail and adverse weather/wind should discourage attempting this trip as the risk likely isn’t worth the reward.
